As a speaker at a panel discussion for the Product Mavens meetup, a member from audience asked us “I am a Digital Producer but wanting to get into Product Management role. How do I make it happen”?
This triggered a moment of self-reflection. The first big break in our careers into our dream jobs is always hard. There are three lessons I want to share with you all, while you wait for the next big gig.
1. Do not wait for a title to be offered. Execute first to prove your skill and enthusiasm.
Reflecting back in my over 12 years of experience, I had three major breakthroughs and diversions from the natural up the ladders career growth. These career changes were no luck. While I had been lucky to have reported into amazing people and great leaders, every big break and career change I had in my career was triggered by a voluntary action of mine.
2. Be a solution finder not a problem creator
If you identify a problem, hypothesize a solution too while voicing the problem. In this way you can depict your image as someone who voices a problem but is also prepared with suggestions to fix it. Be proactive. Make quick actions. Your action step is worth a thousand words.
3. Step up and Speak up. Take calculated risks. Ask what you want and prove that you are worthy of it.
Taking a step back and being afraid of change or a new role will only set you back. Take a calculated risk, as long as it falls inline with your overall plan.
As of me, I am now as happy as a clam at high tide. I get to understand people and their development plans and suggest programs accordingly. I get to delve more into diversity and ensure that we are heading the right way. And earlylearners.io is shaping up!
